2010 Lotus Evora Preview(2)

Lotus dubs its new Evora as having “true character in a faceless world,” (see while Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and other top-tier manufacturers might disagree with the faceless comment, there's no denying the new 2+2 has character. Its rakish lines follow the brand's family design language, although its longer curves and dramatic angles are smoother and more refined looking than its tiny siblings' sharp creases and more radically pronounced proportions.
“A cornerstone of the design's success was working closely with the technical team to develop a package that allowed us to get the proportions correct,” said Russell Carr, Head of Design. “The asymmetric wheel sizes, the short rear overhang, long front overhang and cab forward visor screen all contribute to giving the car visual movement and an agile stance. This is incredibly important to us because we want the car's aesthetics to communicate its driving characteristics.”
The car also makes aerodynamic considerations for drag, downforce and cooling, which fortunately only added to the car's shape in a complementary way, both overall and in the small details like its air intakes. A focus on “balanced downforce” for better handling resulted in what now are the brand's “signature” top exit radiator vent, race car inspired diffuser and “floating rear wing”. The need to reduce drag helped form the cabin's teardrop shape and muscular rear shoulders as well.
“We believe that our designs should be honest as well as dramatic and so we are really pleased with the fact that these iconic features all do a real job,” added Steven Crijns, Design Manager.
