The Lincoln MKT is the kind of show car that is more a pre-production car than a concept. The concept is based on the Ford Flex platform. The Flex, a squarish production vehicle, was also introduced at the Detroit motor show. There are, however, some details of the Lincoln MKT-like the polycarbonate windshield-roof and the doors that open up at an angle to avoid hitting the kerb-that are not likely to become reality until further into the future.
The MKT (T for touring) is an attempt to take Lincoln into the big station wagon arena. Cars with this profile are sometimes called crossovers, but Lincoln already has an MKX (X for crossover). Lincoln calls this version a “luxury utility” vehicle.
Like the MKR concept shown a year earlier, the MKT uses new Lincoln design cues. The grille is shaped like the waves pushed up before a speeding boat, and no body colour divides the grille from the headlights. The sides of the vehicle are two-thirds body, and one-third windows. These visual elements will one day be featured on all Lincoln vehicles, but are today limited to the concept collection.
The side character line continues down the front fenders and under the grille of the car.”We try to create never-ending lines,” says Gordon Platto, chief designer at Lincoln.
Automakers have been working hard with trunk space in recent years, providing various ideas for modular approaches that keep objects from rattling around. The new idea from Lincoln is a series of five little walls that can rise from the flat floor at the push of a button to divide the floor space in various configurations.
Green considerations
Aside from the styling, the MKT tries to exhibit how luxury can also be environmentally friendly. Like the MKR a year ago, the MKT it is powered by a 415 hp twin-turbo3.5-literV-6. The turbocharged engine programme is real, and first EcoBoost V-6 engine will appear next year in the MKS, with 340 hp.
Body panels for the vehicle are lighter than steel and are made of recycled polyester soft drink bottles. The LED headlamps draw just 200 watts, compared with 600 watts for Xenon bulbs. The leather interior is cured without chromium, the carpet is made from banana tree fibres, and the wood trim is made from scrap wood and resins.
